XML has a wide influence in document management in industry and academia - a common lingua franka in Computer Science.
XML is a „plumbing“ technology to link various application areas together (XHTML, SOAP, MathML, SMIL, SVG, …).
Obviously there is a need to encrypt documents in order to restrict accessibility of documents in security critical environments (eHealth, eGovernement, …).
